The piece has four deep and wide drawers, with a gentle curve to the front, and brass handles and key plates.<\/p>\n<p>The commode became fashionable with the French aristocracy in the early 1600&#8217;s, replacing the coffer. Drawers offered ease of access to items, rather than having to delve to the bottom of one&#8217;s coffer. Commodes were designed to capture the attention.
